Created as a replica of the original structure that stands, ruined, in Athens, Greece, The Parthenon in Nashville exists as one scholarly concept of how the original would have looked, fully intact, painted and containing a 42-foot-high statue of the goddess Athena, covered in gold leaf. In addition to its significance as a replica of one of the world's architectural wonders, the building also serves as an art museum, holding works by 19th and 20th century artists, and a performance venue, as often during the summer classical Greek plays take place in front of the structure. It is located inside Centennial Park, just north of Vanderbilt University, a little over a mile southwest of downtown.
